Authorities said the trooper, identified as Jacob Fields, was patrolling on I-75 in Cobb County when he saw a vehicle traveling at what he determined was 98 mph.
When fields tried to pull the vehicle over, police say the driver, later identified as 26-year-old Israel Rodriguez, fled and led Fields and two additional troopers on a chase that lasted 10 miles on I-75.
The troopers eventually tried to box in Rodriguez on the southbound lanes of I-75 near Delk Road, but Rodriguez ended up crashing into a car in front of him, according to authorities.
Police said Rodriguez got out of his vehicle with a handgun and opened fire, which was returned by Fields and the two additional troopers, according to police.
Police said Fields was shot in the lower leg and lower abdomen, below his bulletproof vest. He was taken to the hospital and was alert and conscious, according to police. Fields had surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
